Lacey Spray is a woodworker, artist, and educator based in Hood River, Oregon. Working primarily with locally sourced and salvaged hardwoods from the Columbia Gorge and Willamette Valley, she is drawn to the individuality of each piece of wood and the stories held within its grain, figure, knots, and imperfections.
Rather than beginning with a fixed plan, Lacey often starts with the material itself, allowing its natural characteristics to influence the direction of the work. This process of discovery guides the creation of functional objects that balance utility and beauty while celebrating the uniqueness of the wood.
STATEMENT
Some of my favorite moments in the shop happen when I stop trying to control the outcome and simply pay attention to what the material is offering. Often, those moments come unexpectedly—sometimes while making, sometimes while cleaning up and looking at a piece with fresh eyes. A hidden bark inclusion, a crack that suggests a new direction, or a grain pattern that changes the entire design can transform both the piece and the process.
I am drawn to wood because no two pieces are the same. Most of the wood I use is locally sourced or salvaged, giving new life to material that might otherwise be chipped, burned, or left to decompose. Each piece carries a record of growth, weather, injury, and time. Rather than working against those characteristics, I try to incorporate them into the finished piece. The wood becomes a collaborator rather than a raw material.
Most of my work is functional because I like creating objects that become part of daily routines. A bowl, spoon, board, or vessel can be both useful and visually engaging. My goal is to create pieces that celebrate the character of the wood and bring a sense of connection, beauty, and enjoyment to everyday use.
